Against a backdrop of a difficult budgetary environment, the Department of Health has been managing the pandemic and a major ongoing programme of vaccinations. Pressure on services, difficulty recruiting staff, growing waiting lists and increasing demands on services all add to the challenge. 

Developments such as Integrated Care Planning and the launch of the Department’s digital transformation strategy designed to streamline information sharing and optimise data use - are also important strands of the department’s work. 

Peter May, Department of Health

Peter May is currently Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health. He is also one of two Diversity Champions for the NICS.

Previously Peter was Permanent Secretary at the Department for Justice, the Department for Infrastructure and the Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure. A career civil servant, his previous roles include Director, Safer Communities, DoJ and Principal Private Secretary to the Deputy First Minister.
