This session will explore the potential corporation tax and VAT implications of charities’ activities, and help you to avoid pitfalls and identify tax saving opportunities. In particular, we will cover:

  •  When charity income is exempt from corporation tax
  •  Treatment of trading income – should you have a trading subsidiary?
  •  When a charity could be in business for VAT purposes
  • VAT treatment of charitable activities and when VAT can be recovered
  • VAT reliefs and savings for charities, including on construction and refurbishment of property
  •  Recommendations for minimising potential taxation

The session will be presented by Lee Squires and Alastair King.

Lee is a Director in our Tax practice in Belfast. He has over 12 years’ experience in advising businesses on a wide range of VAT and other indirect tax issues. Lee has acted for businesses in a wide variety of sectors, including charities, public bodies and not-for-profits.


Alastair is a Manager in our Tax practice in Belfast.  He is a chartered tax advisor with over ten years advising companies on how to minimise their taxes in a way that is compliant with tax law.
